You’re Either Learning (and Applying) or Lying. Which one is it?

As Rush Limbaugh used to say, “words mean things.

So many of us find ourselves indulging in information consumption, falsely labeling it as learning, and then failing to make any significant progress towards our goals. As a result, we stay stuck, wondering why we’re still in the same place were were this time last year.

Learning is an active, multi step process.

Beyond the consumption of information, learning also requires that you actively apply the information that you consumed.

You wouldn’t go watch a football game or a movie and then tell yourself you were a football player or an actor, would you?

You wouldn’t say you were “learning” to become either one of those, either, would you?

Why do we trick ourselves when it comes to getting serious about a new skill or a new project?

People watch edu-tainment, buy courses and books, quote & share their favorite personality, and never apply any of it. It’s the difference in going to watch a movie or a sporting event versus actually participating in it.

The difference is vast.

Just becoming aware of of the idea makes us feel like we’ve done something, when in reality, you haven’t. You’ve just tricked yourself into staying stuck for one more day.

Bottom line: if you’re not applying everything that you consume, you’re not learning it.
